About

Finance Film Spot is the brainchild of me, a thirty-something husband / dog dad / man-child with the self-proclaimed nickname Finance Film Fellow.

As far as qualifications, I don't possess a film studies degree and have absolutely no formal training in the subject of cinema (are you convinced yet?). My interest in movies stems from a childhood packed with regular trips to theater and used video stores. Watching and discussing films are a way I connect with people. I love conversing about plot, pacing, character arcs, tone, cinematography, screenplay composition and more. It was only natural then that my love of Hollywood flicks would merge with another hobby of mine (personal finance) and mutate into the monstrosity that is FFS.

This site is an attempt to combine my love for finance, film and (apparently) alliteration into something, dare I say, creative. I started FFS with three hopeful goals in mind: to entertain, educate and connect with others.

If a major studio were ever to release a film called Budgeting Spreadsheet: The Movie, I’d be first in line. That said, I understand this is where I may be in the minority. I recognize the subject of finance, as well as movies about said subject, can often be pretty dry. This is where I’m hopeful that my unique phraseology will assist. Here I shall attempt to deconstruct the complex and sometimes boring topics surrounding fiscal matters and present them in an easy-to-digest and humorous way.

As a lifelong learner, I know it doesn’t take a university classroom to gain a better understanding of the world around us. Researching the financial concepts for my blog posts usually results in me walking away knowing more than I did previously. I figure the least I can do is share that knowledge with others, albeit through my own lens with may prove to be simultaneously boastful and self-deprecating. Turns out this finance stuff actually matters, so why not dedicate a little time to learning more than you already know?

Finally, making friends is hard. That has likely always been the case, but in a post-COVID world it’s especially difficult for those of us who’ve aged out of the classroom. My posts are my own personal criticisms and thoughts on the films discussed. They are not meant to be taken as gospel (i.e., I encourage comments and constructive feedback).

Just maybe, we can create a community of like-minded folks who share these same values. Let’s talk FFS!
